Avril Lavigne Black Star Tour Live in Malaysia 2012

On February 14, the traditional Valentine’s Day, I spent the whole day and night with my exam notes. On February 18, the special Valentine’s Day this year, I spent it with Avril Lavigne at Stadium Merdeka!
Lemme start with telling you how have I been a big fan of the petite Canadian singer. I spent my whole secondary school listening to her songs, from singles like Complicated to When You’re Gone to Wish You Were Here.

Indeed! [source]
I arrived at Stadium Merdeka with my friend, Shaun, at about 5pm and the crowd was already building up. Lucky for us, the private car park just opened and so it wasn’t hard to find a parking; except that it cost RM 10. When we got there, there were already queues for regular zone and rock zone.
Mister Potato Presents Gary Neville at Sunway Pyramid
Mister Potato is the official Global Snack Partner of Manchester United. After signing the sponsorship deal with the Red Devils last year, Mister Potato (or its company Mamee Double Decker Bhd.) has organised contests for customers and Manchester United fans to win trips to Old Trafford to watch Manchester United’s Premier League games.
Last week, the Manchester United legend, Gary Neville, made an appearance at Mister Potato’s road show at Sunway Pyramid. I’ve heard of the news in December and was determined to be there to at least catch a glimpse of him.
And so I did.
Basically, what he did was to spend some time with some lucky Manchester United supporters on stage and the emcees to play some games and win goodies from Mister Potato. 10 lucky fans also got the chance of their lifetime to take a picture with Gary Neville himself.
Though I didn’t get to snap a picture with the legend himself, I brought my gears along and took some of his pictures instead.
Check out more pictures of Gary Neville that I’ve taken after the jump (read more!) :)
Nike We Run KL 10K 2011–My Virgin Run

Latest update: Nike Running Malaysia just released the official results of the Nike We Run KL 10K 2011!! I’m ranked at #1144 and my nett time is 1 hour 10 minutes 12 seconds. Way to go, Stevo! *pats self on back* Next challenge will be the Rakan Muda Puma Open 10K in Cyberjaya on December 17!!
Update 2: Aaaaaannnnnnnndd I think I know who that cute chick is already lolol! Feels so jakun! :x
———————————————
It was my first ever big running event and I must tell you this: it felt freaking awesome!!

After being in my New Year wish list for a few years, I’ve finally gotten a pair of Nike LunarFly 2. And since I missed out on the first Nike We Run KL 10K event last year, I didn’t hesitate a bit to sign up for this year’s Nike We Run KL.

On the night before the Nike We Run KL, I figured that I didn’t have transport to get to Padang Merbok, KL all the way from Cyberjaya, nor do I have a buddy who knows the exact location. So, I lent my housemate’s car before I tweeted Chapree, whom I eventually went to Padang Merbok with.

Chapree – my running buddy for Nike We Run KL 10K 2011
We parked the car at the Dataran Merdeka car park, and walked to Padang Merbok which is less than five minutes walk away. There were a lot of participants there already when we arrived. God knows how excited I was. And to be honest, I actually slept for only a little more than two hours the night before the run and I’m not proud of it.
I was afraid that I might actually faint while running!

But of course I didn’t faint half way. That’d be really embarrassing. lol.
JJ from Hitz.fm was the emcee that morning. I could hear him speaking early in the morning when we were walking to Padang Merbok. His voice is pretty easy to recognise. #justsaying

Before the run was flagged off, I managed to go around the place to snap some pictures, while Chapree stayed and did some warm-ups.

There was literally thousands of runners in red/orange anticipating for the start of the run. From what I observed, the participants consisted of mostly youngsters, teenagers and secondary school kids. There were also veterans and family runners! :)
In contrast to what most must have believed, there were a lot of girl runners too! So many that Chapree kept reminding me to stay calm and focus during the run LOL.

This was taken seconds after the start of the run. Everyone was so enthusiastic and energetic!
Meanwhile, at Padang Merbok…

Well, it’s understandable since there’s over ten thousand people running. lol.
We started off really well. I kept my pace with Chapree’s and went over 6 kilometres before I zoomed off to finish the remaining kilos. It was a beautiful morning with so many runners running Kuala Lumpur and thank God the weather was pretty good too.

We ran from Padang Merbok, around Taman Tasik Perdana, towards Jalan Tun Sambathan, before going up to Lebuhraya Mahameru and then turning back to Padang Merbok. I was grateful to have a running buddy. It’s always nice to have someone you know running with you. Companionship keeps you going.

That morning we painted the city orange. There was this funny scene at Jalan Tun Sambathan. When I was running past that street, I could see the buses being stranded there because the road was closed; and I overheard one of the bus driver’s conversation while I was running past him. “Ramai orang baju merah tengah lari,” he said on the phone. He must be explaining to his boss about the road closure at KL Sentral.
Another factor that made the run interesting were the performances along the route. There were performers performing using traditional music instruments at a few bus stops. Some runners even stopped to take pictures with the performers :)

Don’t get me wrong – I did not ‘walk the run’. I actually ran, but when I saw something interesting that I wanted to capture, I slowed down for a few seconds just to get the shot before I continue running.
I was holding a Nikon compact camera with me. No way was I gonna hold a bulky DSLR while running 10K, right? That’s kinda crazy but there was actually people who did that!

TO THE PARLIAMENT!!!
In long runs like this, it is important that one keeps his composure and be consistent with his running pace. For me, I kept my pace low and consistent over the first six kilometres with Chapree before I started running faster towards the end. Imagine that if I were to have started the run with faster pace, I would have been knocked out by the time I reach 4-5 kilometres for sure.

Final stretch, let’s go!
Because let’s face it, I’m new in running long distance and I don’t run very often apart from during my futsal games. So, during my last few kilometres which I actually increased my pace, it was actually quite tiring but I kept on going at consistent pace until I finally see 800m….600m….300m….
You know, when you see road signs telling you ‘Hey look you’re x hundred metres away from the finishing line!’ you just get really motivated to finish it quick. If it never happened to you, it’s okay, at least it happened to me.
In my last few hundred metres, I started sprinting like I was running home. At that moment, my limbs felt light and all I wanted to do was to finish the run like a boss, which I did. And it felt great to take over those who were still taking their sweet time to the finishing line. lol.
Managed to slow down to snap this picture before I went across the finishing line.
10K finishers were given a bottle of mineral water, a banana, and a finisher’s gift each. This year’s finisher’s gift is a cute little keychain like model of Nike LunarGlide 3.

Anddddddddddddd this cute little thing is actually a 1GB thumb drive!!

Looks so cute, rightttttttt haha!
We Run KL isn’t just about running KL. Nike Malaysia also prepared other awesome stuffs for the participants such as the photo booth, where the runners could have their pictures taken and uploaded to Facebook directly!

Snap here…

Then upload here!
You gotta admit that it’s pretty cool. Also, Nike Malaysia invited Mizz Nina and Joe Flizzow to perform for the exhausted runners.

Mizz Nina took the stage shortly after I finished my run.

Followed by Joe Flizzow’s performance.

10K finishers enjoying the shows

I had the VIP privilege that morning all thanks to Chapree and well, what can I say but I totally didn’t see it coming.

The best part of having the VIP tag is the FOOD! And I guess that’s about it. lol.

FOOD FOOD FOOD and a bit of teh tarik which I didn’t fancy gulping after a long, tiring run.
Oh, after the run, I met my primary school friend, Yenshen, too!

Never have I thought that I might bump into any of my hometown friends. Haha! It was good to see you there bro :D
Speaking about inspirations, there was this guy who have always been running in his sarung. To some it might seem ridiculous, but I don’t think he’s crazy. I think he wants to be different and he is different. I didn’t ask him why he ran in sarung though, just said hi and took a picture with him. Haha!

He’s awesome alright! :)
So, after that Chapree and I hung around the field before leaving the place. It was such a fantastic run and such a great event by Nike Malaysia. I’ll surely sign up for Nike We Run KL 2012 if there’s one!
It’s my city. I ran it. Once. Run it again, I MUST!
Not exactly my city ‘cos I still love Kuala Terengganu my hometown tercinta but well… you get my drift :P
Before I forget, there’s this cute girl who was interviewed by the media after the 10K run. She looked very familiar but I just couldn’t tell who she is.

Do you who she is? :)
Nike We Run KL 10K 2011 Race Pack Collection

When I missed out on the first Nike We Run KL 10K last year, I made a promise to myself that I must join the next one if there’s ever gonna be one. Finally, Nike We Run KL 10K is back! And I’ve just collected my race pack earlier this afternoon at the Nike We Run KL road show in Midvalley.
I must say Nike is really generous. Following are the items provided in the race pack:

Clockwise from top left: Nike bottle, Nike We Run KL running shirt, information brochure, D-tag.
I totally did not see the Nike bottle coming, and the running shirt’s colour matches with my Nike LunarFly+ running shoes pretty well. Haha! I’m so excited!
LET’S RUN KL!! :D

Imagine Cup 2011 Malaysia Day Two

If Day One was interesting, Day Two is awesome!
The second day of the Imagine Cup is the actual competition day. It kicked off as early as 9am with a panel of 9-person judge checking out presentations of all 30 hopeful teams before finalising the top six teams to proceed for the next round.

Augmented Reality Story Book, from Multimedia University, Cyberjaya.
It’s the day the teams were looking forward to – to show the judges what they’ve got and to be the best amongst the rest. The place was crowded and very much alive throughout the presentation session. The judges were divided into three groups as they were presented with different types of ideas and innovations by the participants.
The presentations went quite well as judges were startled by some really amazing imaginations of the lads.
Take for example, the Asia Science team from UCTI,
..who have created the Power Transmission Automation – an enterprise system that manages transmission of power in power substations. The system introduces a different way of power transmission which could simplify and make the management of power substation more affordable.
Sounds really good – so good that I think Japan should TOTALLY check it out. I mean, it works with nuke plants, do they?
Following are some pictures that I’ve taken when other teams were presenting their awesome to-come-true imaginations:
I guess it must be stressful for the contestants – first, you’ve got to come out with an idea (or should I say you gotta imagine big), then you’ll make your imagination (idea) a reality. Hmm.. If I could, I would create a device that produces water through chemical reaction of the sunlight and something. Then, we could mass produce it and distribute them to the people or victims suffering in poorer countries.
That way, they wouldn’t die thirsty, no? Oh no- I think the water should be replaced with some liquid that keeps one full, not hungry. Yeah, but wait, that liquid is more like chemistry or.. I don’t know, nutrition science?
Too complicated, too complicated – guess that’s why I’ll never join the Imagine Cup; cos I think I’ll be better off playing with shutter speed, aperture, and ISO :P
Never mind me, Team RGBY (picture above) of University Kebangsaan Malaysia has got pretty good idea nevertheless. I have no idea if RGBY stands for Red Green Blue and Yellow, but their Project Hive is about a web application that cuts short waiting time for any particular services.
They were inspired by the current queue management systems in hospitals that very often crowd the patients into a common room. It poses more health threat for the already sickened patients. Hmm, that’s no wonder why many don’t like to go the hospital, no?
The system they imagine aims to ‘reduce the number of people waiting in common waiting area and reduce the waiting time of the customers’. Simple idea that could very help us in our daily lives which many have overseen.
Before the presention even ended, the event got noisier (in a good way, of course) with the visits from several secondary schools in Kuching. Throughout the guided tour, the local students had the opportunity to learn more about the Imagine Cup, and more importantly, to see and to acknowledge the awesome ideas of the participating teams.
Who knows one day, they could be in the future Imagine Cup finals!
The results were released during lunch time and the top 6 teams were:
Filius Educata from University College of Technology and Innovation
Excalibur from University Teknologi Malaysia
Asia Science from University College of Technology and Innovation
KCast from Kolej Damansara Utama
Cyber Knightz from University College of Technology and Innovation
RGBY from University Kebangsaan Malaysia (told ya the idea was awesome!)
At the time of posting, the teams have already gone through the second round presentations, which were conducted behind closed-doors since 2.30pm. I had to miss out the fun of watching the suspense and the tenseness of the participants to write this post lol!
Anyway, fingers crossed for the teams as the results of the final six could be announced anytime before the Grand Dinner at the Pullman Hotel with the attendance of Minister of Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
The final three teams will be presenting during the Grand Dinner – and the winners will be representing Malaysia at the Imagine Cup 2011 world finals in New York this July.
To wrap up this post, I hereby attach an image of the wall of photos taken during the Imagine Cup 2011. All the images were taken by Jackie and I, and were printed by the Microsoft Student Partners who were there.

Imagine Cup Malaysia 2011 Finals at Pullman Kuching (Day One)

I’m in Kenny Sia‘s hometown now as the official blogger for the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2011 Malaysia finals, which happens from May 4th-6th.
Upon arrival, we (as in the bloggers) were transferred to the Grand Margherita Hotel in the heart of Kuching. Earlier in the morning, we were late for the flight and ran from the departure gate all the way to the plane, which was parked at the end of the corridor.
Ironically, the flight was further delayed because apparently they messed up the cargo or something.
The hotel room is very nice and comfortable, and it even comes with an LCD tele! With ESPN! *grins*
We were given a bag each that contained our tag, a Tourism Sarawak green woven bag, an Imagine Cup polo tee, and the Imagine Cup prospectus.
Anyway, at noon we walked to the Pullman Hotel which is about five minutes walk away to check out the Imagine Cup 2011 preparation works. Of course before that, we had our lunch first.
Lunch was good but not the spaghetti.

Clockwise from top left: Samantha & Victoria, CJ, Samantha, Wei Wen

Team YHA from Multimedia University Cyberjaya.
Today is the day where the participants arrive and set up their booths for their presentation on the following day. There are a total of 30 teams competing in this final and only ONE team will make it to represent Malaysia in the world final this July.
That explains why nothing much happened today as the teams were busy preparing their booths while we toured around taking pictures and watching them work.
Highlight of the day came in the evening – the Welcoming BBQ Dinner, which was at the Grand Margherita Hotel.
The dinner was attended by ‘big guns from upstairs’. Among them were:
Mr Azli Jamil, the GM of Microsoft Malaysia;
Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Yusoff bin Hassan, the Chairman of Imagine Cup Malaysia 2011 Organising Committee, who’s also the Vice Chancellor of Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka;
and last, but certainly not the least,
the Minister At The Sarawak Chief Minister’s Office, YB Datin Hajah Fatimah bt. Abdullah.
All three of the VIPs welcomed all the participants as well as the media representatives in their respective speeches before the BBQ dinner started. YB also wished the teams good luck for the Imagine Cup. Before ending her speech, YB sung a verse of local poem which drew loud applause from the crowd.
Following are some pictures that I’ve taken during the BBQ dinner.

Team IMGS from Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia posing with their university’s flag together with (standing from left at the back) Mr Azli Jamil, YB Datin Hajah Fatimah and Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Yusoff.
Just before the dinner ended, all the teams were given a small trophy each by YB before she was presented with a flower basket as a token of appreciation by the organisers.
That marked the end of Day One. On the following day, the teams will be assessed from both booth presentation and closed-room presentation. At night, there’ll be a grand dinner at Pullman Hotel where the award presentation ceremony will take place.
The ceremony will be officiated by YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, the Minister of Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE). Do check out Wei Wen, Samantha, Victoria and Jackie‘s blogs too for more updates on the Imagine Cup Malaysia 2011! :)
Hello Kuching!!

Never have I imagined myself stepping on the soils of Sarawak this soon.
However, courtesy of Microsoft Malaysia, here I am in Kuching (for the first time in my life!!) for the Imagine Cup Malaysia 2011 finals.
This is a short post cos I’m just trying out the WordPress app I’ve just installed few days ago. Anyway, I’ll be updating a lot more on the ongoing Malaysia chapter of Imagine Cup 2011 finals alongside with fellow bloggers Jackie, Victoria, Samantha and Wei Wen.
Della Wu Live in MMU Cyberjaya Second Video
I don’t know why it is taking so much time for me to do this. But anyway, do enjoy.
There should be another one coming. Hopefully before this week ends. =)

Della Wu Live Performance Video at MMU Cyberjaya
As the follow up of the previous post, this is the video of Della Wu performing live at MMU Cyberjaya on August 3rd.
Click here to watch the clip on Youtube.
Sorry for the voice towards the end of the video. It was actually me and a friend of mine, Khai Sheng. lol. Anyway, I have another video of her performance and a video of her singing and dancing with some fans. They’ll be uploaded when I have time. =)
丁当 Della Wu Live at MMU Cyberjaya
I didn’t know that she’s a female until I heard her song being played on Radio MMU. I swear I didn’t know who is Ding Dang 丁当. She was on a promo tour of her latest album ‘Fu Good’ (read as feel good) and MMU Cyberjaya was one of the stops.

She sang 我是一只小小鸟(I’m a little birdie) as she made her appearance in the lecture hall. Fans who packed the hall cheered.
Everyone was excited. The ambience was ecstatic.

Flashguns of cameras started flashing as soon as she entered the hall.

She dressed rather casually that night, a normal shirt and mini skirt and a microphone were all that she needed to put up a great show.
Singing pose and expressions were non-ordinary too =P

She sang a couple of songs and chatted with the audience in between. A very friendly person with powerful voice despite her rather small frame.

I believe there amount of audience was in the range of 200 to 300. She’s such a hit. No wonder so many wanna see her perform live.
After performing, she sat down by the table as fans made a looooong queue to get her autograph.

Most of them got to shake hand with Della Wu, and you bet they looked as if they were on top of the world. Ding Dang looked as cheerful as the fans.

A picture of her bidding goodbye to the people before she left, which marked the end of the event.

Now not only I got to realise that Ding Dang isn’t a guy, I now know she has powderful vocal. I know I’m very the slowpoke but anyway, it was such a privilege to have listened to her live.
Videos of her performance coming soon, so stay tuned ;)
Special thanks to My FM and CLS MMU Cyberjaya.
Mizz Nina ‘What You Waiting For’ Album Launch
It’s undeniable that local artistes have been growing quite rapidly in recent years and many will probably agree that Shazrina binti Azman, or better known as Mizz Nina, has made an impact on Malaysia’s local music scene.

Her single ‘What You Waiting For’, which is a product of her collaboration with Akon’s protégé, Colby O’Donis, has been quite a hit, not only locally but at international level too.

Last Saturday, Mizz Nina launched her solo debut album at Zouk KL with special appearance of Colby O’Donis. Mizz Nina performed a few songs from her latest album including the hit single ‘What You Waiting For’, which she performed with her American counterpart, ColbyO.

Mizz Nina’s performances were nothing short of powerful. She was very energetic on the stage albeit her rather small size and her friendliness (noticed that when she was interviewed by the media).

Not forgetting Colby O’Donis who put up an equally amazing performance that evening. Due to request from the fans towards the end of the event, ColbyO performed ‘What You Got’ as the closing act of the album launch.

The fans were thrilled. It was awesome.
Haven’t got her album? What You Waiting For?

Peter Schmeichel in Kuala Lumpur
Standing at 1.93 metres and being the Tiger Biscuits’ ambassador, Peter Schmeichel made an appearance in Carrefour of Midvalley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

He was in town for the Tiger Futbol Starz, a football reality show aimed to discover young Malaysian football talents under twelve years of age.
The former Denmark international also made an appearance at Giant Shah Alam later on the same day.

Hundreds of Manchester United fans crowded the booth where Mr Schmeichel was sitting while singing autographs with a few event crews watching on from the sides. Die-hard fans arrived in their Man United jerseys before 2pm and the queue was so long that many went home with mere disappointment as Mr Schmeichel, aka the Great Dane, was escorted away at 3pm sharp.

I went all the way to Midvalley with some companions just to shoot ‘the living legend’. By the time I arrived at Carrefour after having my lunch, the place was already crowded with people in red.
It was like a little Red Devils kampung there. Even kids were there to meet the Great Dane, who was one of the world’s finest goalkeeper, and to get his autograph.

Oh, just realised the kid was wearing my favourite cartoon’s shirt.
Some even went as far as bringing their Red baby Devil there to meet Peter Schmeichel!

To be honest, I didn’t really bother to waste my time queuing up for the autograph. The moment I was there, I started shooting until he left. Shot about 60 shots but didn’t have any which he looks into the lens. Well, that’s just too bad.
But never mind, I believe the satisfaction of sharing the photos here is more than enough, even though I should have gotten his autograph instead.

Probably I wouldn’t be as stupid if it was David Beckham or Cristiano Ronaldo.
The End Of Kuala Terengganu By-Election
Small Talk: Won 14 out of 21 games played, drew 5 and lost 2 games (both away) and we’re on top of the Premier League table!! The spirit of Red Devils never fade, no one can bring us down that easy. March on, Red Devils!!
Congratulations Terengganu people. I believe you all have did the right thing to ensure younger generations (like me) to have a better future.

Last night, the people in Kuala Terengganu went into craze. Not only Terengganu people, I suppose Pakatan Rakyat’s supporters all around Malaysia were all happy for PAS Terengganu for their victory.

PAS candidate, Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut won by 2631 majority. I believe everyone knew it already since it was reported on the news since last night. After Permatang Pauh, comes Kuala Terengganu – winning both seats within half a year’s time is indeed a flying start for the Pakatan Rakyat to take over the government.
I don’t expect much actually. Just keep Malaysians good and prosper. When the people are good, the country will be good. When the country is good, I don’t see why would the people give the government troubles, right?

Anyway, I went over to Ming Star Hotel last night after I got to know that PAS won the by-election. Why Ming Star Hotel, you ask? It’s because the bloggers team were staying there since the past 10 days. And if you have been following their blog posts since the by-election campaign started, you can see the difference between their news and the news reported on the dailies. Which is true, which is fake – you decide.
People who drove past the hotel kept honking and some even stopped to shake hands with Raja Petra Kamarudin (RPK). It’s an honour to have met RPK. He was waving and giving high fives to passers-by with a cigar clipped between his lips. I guess he must be over the moon when he knew PAS won.
The atmosphere was magnificent. It was like watching football match with thousands of people, only this time, it was the honking sound that made up the noise instead of people’s cheers. The flow of cars and motorcycles kept coming as if there isn’t an end.
One of the motorcyclists stopped by to shake hand with Raja Petra and the fler who was sitting at the back, while shaking his hand with Raja Petra, he cried ‘I love you Raja Petra!’. Some others drove by and yelled ‘RPK!!’ whilst some chanted ‘Reformasi!!’ and so forth.
I didn’t miss out. I took videos (see bottom of this post) and pictures of the people there and I got to take a picture with RPK too. I’m not a big fan of his, but he certainly is my idol.
Because of him, I know what’s happening in Malaysia. And he is one of the reasons that got me interested in journalism. But too bad, too bad I still want to fly.

One gang of PAS supporters came over to cheer on RPK. Many of them thanked him for his help. He has convinced a lot of Chinese to vote for PAS, I suppose. Meanwhile at the Kampung Cina area, I was told by my friend that Malays (those supporters, of course) were driving past the street shouting “Torcheh! Sie Sie! Kamsiah!” to the people there. It simply means ‘Thank You’ in Cantonese, Mandarin and Hokkien, respectively.
Now you see a Malaysia.

I didn’t stay until very late. Went to Uncle Chua for a cup of hot Mocha before I drove home. Although I wasn’t part of the team or part of any of those supporters, I could feel that kind of happiness – a better tomorrow kind of happiness. Of course they’d feel even more glad than me since they’ve gave all their effort out to pull the votes, while I merely sit at home reading updates on the blogs.
Wait till it’s my time.
At the same place, I met Ee Chia who’s also part of the bloggers team. Exchanged a few words and took a picture. She blogs at http://eechia.blogspot.com. On the other note, I talked to a young man who followed his lecturer (who is also part of the bloggers team, too) to KT for the by-election campaign. He’s from Johore and currently studying in New Era College near Kajang and that’s all I know about him. lol. Well, let’s just hope there’s another chance to meet with these great people (:
The street cooled down when clock was hitting eleven. Got home quick to catch the Manchester United’s match before I was too late. Watched second half and watched Berbatov’s header. And that victory marked a wonderful January 17.

Shou Soon had his perfect January 17 too when he celebrated his birthday with some friends, also, at the Ming Star Hotel’s restaurant. They got to take a picture with RPK too when they were done and were going home.

RPK typing SMS on his phone. Sitting beside him is his wife, Marina Lee Abdullah.
Following are some of the videos I took last night:
PAS supporters cheering on Raja Petra.
Raja Petra waving to supporters whilst smoking his cigar in style. Listen to the honking sound! They never stopped honking =D
And those PAS supporters created a new song for Raja Petra – Raja Petra Yang Mulia…

Doesn’t he look cool with his cigar? (:
Merdeka Parade In Kemaman, Terengganu
Small Talk: Happy Birthday, Sharon!
National’s Independence Day is usually a day for me to sleep till the sun burns my butt. But for the nation’s 51st birthday, it was different.

Different for I’ve been to the organising district for the Merdeka Day parade. In my entire life, I’ve never been to any bloody parade until then and mind you, walking in a group with thousands pairs of eyes watching at you as if they’re taking you as laughing stock isn’t nice.
Horribly embarrassing, I’d say.
All the Lower Sixth Form students must be there unless you’ve got reasonable excuse.
Like let’s say, your mom’s step-sister’s grandson’s cousin’s faraway relative from maybe somewhere near Fiji is going to marry. And yes, you’re excused.
At 6pm of August 30th, we took off from school in a bus which the driver himself doesn’t obey his own rules.

I believe you get the picture of what he did in his bus now.
Tanggongjawab. Gong kao beh si.
There in Kemaman, we were placed at SMK Kijal where we spent a terrible night there in their hostel. So terrible you’d rather attend National Service. And worst of all, we didn’t get enough sleep that night.
The next morning, we were told to get ready by 5am and yes we did that just to find ourselves waiting like some dumbarses waiting for tahi bintang outside the hostel.

To make things worse, breakfast was not served properly.
The canteen staff freaking provided us with some poorly made bread and eggs. They didn’t even put some butter or margarine for us!
Niamah, they must have thought we were preparing for puasa as well.
We were then sent to the place where we’d be starting the parade with some hundreds other contingents from the whole Terengganu.

We started to line up even before 7am.
Someone who I presumed was the MC grabbed the mic and announced that the parade would start at 7.30am. It was 7am. So we waited as other contingents started to fill the road.
I’m not sure but I think this is typical Malaysian attitude.

Kanasai, 7.41am liao still didn’t start yet. So Malaysian.
While waiting, I did what I do best.

First I took Ah Bong The Genius’ kind-looking face.

Then, Cheng Hao the tall and handsome bloke.

Jun Rong aka Rony who has got sexy tiny eyes.
Not forgetting our squad’s commando…

…who looked as if he’s pharking pissed with the delay.

Before the parade started around eight-something in the morning, our beloved Menteri Besar of Terengganu Dato’ Seri Ahmad Said proudly presented his speech.
Nien said his voice doesn’t match his face, which concludes that we should never judge a book by its cover.
Nothing was interesting from the speech but there was something interesting on the stage.

Notice the banner on the stage?
There were all five faces of the Prime Ministers – from Tunku Abdul Rahman, the nation’s very first Prime Minister who also made the independence of Malaya (now Malaysia) possible, to the current Pak Lah.
On the other side of the banner, the only face printed there was Mr Ahmad Said’s face. Where are the faces of ex-Menteri Besar of Terengganu, I wondered.
You know, for example, the specky?

Later, we started the parade. It’s like parading to hell when some bystanders kept telling us that our steps were wrong and that we marched suckily in a rude manner.
Oh, so that is how they celebrate Merdeka Day. Now I see.

I could see many things through the 3km journey on foot.

Like some hooligans who climbed over the cement wall to watch us that made me felt as if we were some superstars from Russia parading for peace.
Then we walked past a building that looked like our very own Cathay Cinema building which is now a worthless warehouse.

It is actually a family futsal indoor pitch in the old building.
Engrish is everywhere English is.
The walk got further and as we walked closer to the end, the famous kopitiam here almost successfully lure us there to ruin the parade.
The best coffee in town
Wonder why the spectators were looking at my camera… Likes to get snapped so much ah?
People are getting creative nowadays.

Welcome to Skybox Karaoke. A karaoke centre where you can sing as if you’re flying high in the sky.
So, do you give free Sky Juice to the customers ah?

Our walk ended pretty soon but not the parade itself. Our school brass band was still rooting at the starting point where we left about an hour ago. Imagine that.
We then spent some time hanging around the place until Pancaragam Swadaya finally arrived.

The year’s national champions and they were certainly what everyone was anticipating for – even the YBs themselves.

Yen Ming (Yenshen’s younger brother) is the new Drum Major after Lim Viking, who won the national level Best Drum Major award and guess what: He is only fifteen!

And he looked perfectly smart that morning.
So smart he outshone the state gahmen‘s Mercedes Benz E200 sedans.
Pancaragam Swadaya closed the curtain of the parade and they then emerged as the winner of Best Brass Band and Overall Champions of the parade. And they freaking won RM9000 altogether!
It must be the best Merdeka Day for the band.
Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka! We cried.

But do you know the real meaning of Merdeka?
Happy 51st Merdeka, Malaysia.
Music Fest CHWS ’08
Small Talk: It was Steven’s Expression’s first birthday on last Friday (July 11th)!
The political scene in Malaysia is getting fugly, so is my face coz’ acnes and pimples have been popping out of nowhere recently and now, I shall declare war against acnes!!
Music Fest happened a week ago but I can still feel the heat.
I mean the heat. The. HEAT. In the hall.
Look at how…
…they tried to cook us alive.
Seriously, the committee did a good job preventing those who wants-to-watch-but-unwilling-to-pay-for-the-ticket morons from getting into the hall.
But then in the end, it was the spectators and even worse, the judges, who suffered.
It was like 1600 police officers setting up roadblocks “to ensure security in the capital” but ended up causing massive traffic jams.
Likewise, the committee members did whatever they could to keep the hall closed “to ensure security in the hall” but ended up causing massive carbon-dioxide-filled building.
However, the Music Fest was still a blast. Talented students showed their heart for singing and shamelessly performed on the stage upon hundreds of spectators, who were mainly students of CHWS.
Too bad Sony Music’s representatives weren’t there, or else they might have nabbed some contestants back to their office and make them the future stars and hope that they don’t end up like Britney Spears.
Kent and another pretty girl were the hosts of the event. Standing on the stage, facing the crowd and holding the microphones with their quivering hands wasn’t an easy task for the duo.
Especially when they have to tremble their way through their broken accent. And worst of all, they read from paper notes.
Maybe it’s because they’re still young. Or maybe they’re still new. Or maybe, just maybe it’s because I’m just being fussy.
No point mentioning the hosts that much since the contestants should be under the limelight, instead of the hosts.
Form Three’s Sher Rin (image above) made her mom proud by winning the solo singing category. Well, if you haven’t already know, her mom is my MUET teacher.
Group singing was okay. Initially.
Then it turned a little funny when the group (in image above) started to perform.
They have real loyal supporters. It’s like watching MTV Asia Awards in Genting Arena Of Stars.
Okay, maybe not.
Darn, I wish I have supporters to celebrate with when I score a goal in the upcoming football tournament.
But I know that it’s not gonna happen unless I pay RM50 to those who show up to “be my fan”. Hmm… Even if I do that, guys won’t get to benefit from it and you know why.
I did mention about the hot dance performance in small talk of my previous post but I didn’t tell you about the bboy performance, did I?
Anyway, I’ve uploaded the video of the bboy performed by the Advanced Rhythm Crew (image above), led by Minn Jiet, on Google Video.
I’d give 3.5 over 5 stars for an amateur bboy performance. What say you?
Last, but not least, we’ve one duet couple who received great positive response from the audiences. And honestly, the girl sang the Cantonese song flawlessly.
Too bad the judges weren’t impressed. At all.
CHWS Sports Day ’08
Small Talk: Up next will be the update on CHWS Music Fest 2008. You can check out the video of a hot dance performed by a group of students at my Youtube page.
It has been almost a month since I transferred to SMK Chung Hwa Wei Sin and many things happened. Competitions, celebrations, silly-actions, you name it.

I can hardly say this school sucks. But at the same time, I wouldn’t say it rocks.
I still have problem seeing Chinese everywhere, I mean, EVERYWHERE in the school. I couldn’t help myself since I’m more used to smaller Chinese community, like what I used to experience in my previous school.
But time has changed, things changed and I should change too I’m changing too.
Changing for good, that is.
Sports Day was organised later than usual this year. It used to be in March but this year, as I mentioned, things changed, and they postponed the event to June.
I’m very sad to say, this year’s Sports Day was boring. I’ve been a loyal spectator since the past few years even though I wasn’t part of the school.
The decoration of canopies used to be one of the main attractions and normally members of the house would spend their time like they’re decorating their new home after marrying prince/princess charming.
The performances by the Gendang Besar team and the school band – Swadaya always rocked the event. Why wouldn’t they?
Gendang Besar team of CHWS is probably the best around Kuala Terengganu town city and Swadaya band had been champions of Terengganu state for nine consecutive years. Imagine that!
But only God knows if they’ll keep their title this year. I hope they will.
To me, watching some moron tryna break the school record while jumping over one cheap stick and feels so freaking proud about it when he did it is nothing but boring.
Jump. Wanna see me jump to your bed and whack you in your arse and snap a photo of your arse with a red palm mark on it and upload it to the internet so that everyone on Earth knows how you got smacked by me?
No, you probably don’t. Moral of the story, never, NEVER be too proud of what you’ve achieved because someone else might achieve higher than you did.
To me, the lack of canopies’ decoration simply shows the lack of spirit among the competitors and the supporters.
Seriously. Without the decorations, the whole event looked so dull.
Watching two leng chais competing in the relays won’t add any colours to the event itself.
Seeing a short arse holding the stupid stick for the shooter won’t help either.
Not to say when he shrinks himself between his armpits whenever Mr Tan fires a shot. =.=”
Don’t know want to laugh at him or pity him.
I didn’t see the supporters being supportive until the relays started. So, I suppose they were not there for nothing after all.
You see, sometimes when you don’t show enough love support for your own team-mates or sports-house-mates, they probably will have imported supporters.
Well, I don’t mean they imported the two look-alike ladies to support them, but hey, even those who graduated came back and became water-fish helped out, okay?
The sales weren’t as exciting as it used to be. I still remember when my friends who were selling stuff for their club’s fund. The spirit and power they showed was more than anything else.
I still remember Chunbey and Shuwei selling me ice-cream goreng. Haha..
But then, those were yesterday’s.
The not-so-amazing Sports Day ended with the highly anticipated competition – the tarik tali competition. I don’t know what is it called in English. It’s a game where both sides with the same amount of guys pull the rope until the mark touches the line (marked on the ground) of either side.
The side that managed to pull the opponent’s mark crosses their line wins.
I hope you understand me.
Okay, it’s called tug of war. (Thanks to ChoonKhai)
Ridiculously, I don’t know who won.
Because I was busy recording the competition all the way I didn’t care about who’s pulling whose dick. But no worries, I’ll upload the videos to Youtube soon.
CHWS Teacher’s Day Celebration
It was a huge one, although the hall isn’t.

I was in fact late for the whole celebration event as I was only thinking of attending the so called concert. I found out that I have actually missed quite number of shows, including the 24 Season’s Drum and silat performances only when I got the photos from Carrie.

And they actually performed lion dance to welcome the VIPs.

Likewise, I missed a choir performed by a group of CHWS teachers and dikir barat performance by a group of Malay students.

From what I see from the image, I wonder why there wasn’t any Chinese or Indian flers in the dikir barat team? You know, we had dikir barat performances almost every time there was an event or occasion back in National Service.

And I was one of the regular participants. I’m a Chinese, mind you. I think the non-Malays should join in as well. It’s not harmful, aren’t they?
Before the concert started, the organising committee, which consisted Form 6 students, organised a short but interesting tele-match for the teachers.
They even came out with a game derived from one of the National Service’s Character Building modules’ activity – building a plane using no glues, no scissors, no threads, no nothing, just newspapers.

And the teachers weren’t very stupid less-smart after all.
Darn, I really missed plenty of shows. I regret the most for missing the poem reciting performance.

You know why? The reciters were four pretty girls, said Carrie. But then they don’t look any prettier than Madonna in the image to me. Or maybe they are just not as photogenic as Malaysian Dreamgirls.
And their clothes. They will certainly look fabulous in those clothes only if they are attending a birthday party, but not when they’re on the stage as poem reciters.
Moving on to the tiny hall, where the loud speakers almost brought the hall down throughout the celebration concert.
Saying that it is a Teacher’s Day celebration makes me feel stupid.

You don’t need electric guitars and drum set to sing a Thank-You-I-Love-You-Teachers song, do you?
They totally turned a Teacher’s Day celebration day to their replication of the Hillsong United concert. Only they didn’t perform worshipping songs like Hillsong United does.

They even hired a music management company to rock the hall. I thought they really wanna bring down the hall so that they can make full use of their soon-to-complete new hall.
Hell. They must be goddamn gratitude towards their teachers.

I must praise the performers. They really had the courage to stand up to thank their teachers. Or maybe they were just using the chance to show off their talent?

Anyway, the audience was kind enough to show their support by giving applauses to the performers although some were total nonsense.
The almost three-hour performances in the decades old hall was filled with some fairly interesting performances, some hot girls playing violin, some kickass live band, some sick arses with their lousy singing trying to bring down the house as well as the exaggerative fire effects that almost killed a performer.
However, it was entertaining enough as a lunch appetiser for me.
The most remarkable performance wasn’t the live band which closed the curtain for the so called concert, which many would think it was the only performance that almost got the stage collapsed.

Personally, I think the performance of the combination of Chinese orchestra and modern violin was awesome, though it was not a kickass one.
Like I mentioned, there were some hot pretty girls playing the violin as well as traditional Chinese music instruments. Forgive me for not mentioning the male violinist.
That simply shows and proofs that I’m normal.

The school’s choir team’s performance was good too. It was so good that I actually enjoyed their singing so much, I forgot what songs they sang. Some Twinkle-Twinkle-Little-Star-type songs I suppose.
The celebration day ended with a live band performance by the school’s official band. Is it an official band? I don’t know that.

The band’s performance was made kickass when the smoke effect came out of nowhere which eventually drew an enormous applause from the crowd of viewers.
The band – which consisted 18-year-old guitarist, Jeffery, 15-year-old drummer, Caleb, a bassist and lastly the lead singer – had four attempts to crumple the hall that still has Mr Idris Jusoh’s photo hanging above the stage.

Good thing YB Dato’ Ahmad Said wasn’t in the VIP guest list.
They performed three songs (Can’t Take My Eyes Off You; Itu Kamu; I Don’t Love You) before being encored by the audiences. And guess what? The lead singer decided to repeat the second song he performed as to fulfil the encore request…
…which I personally think that it was a bad choice.

They had fire effect, smoke effect and ribbon-snowing effect. And when smoke and ribbon-snowing effect occurs, you’ll get something like this.

Now I know why they’ve had the music management there.
Well, maybe I should have brought along some tear gas grenades just in case the fire-ribbon-smoke effects combination wouldn’t work. At least I can make it a memorable Teacher’s Day.

Nah, just kidding.
SUKMA ’08 In Terengganu
This is Malaysia. This really is Malaysia. Pasted outside the aquatic stadium, the printed notice reads…

This is just so… Malaysian.
Everyone knows about SUKMA in Terengganu. And the Terengganu government spent billions just for the event and through the event itself, trying to lure more tourists and visitors to Terengganu.

I can’t tell if all these are gonna be a success or not. Let’s hope it will be, shall we?
Sukma comes to Terengganu and I bet most of the Terengganu citizens are excited about it.
Okay, maybe not.

But at least I am.
Today, I watched some swimming events at the Terengganu Aquatic Complex, Batu Buruk. The place used to be a public swimming pool before they started the renovation and turned the junk into an international-class swimming pool what it is today.

Look at the roof. And look at the new stadium’s design. Maybe the architects ran out of idea. Really, it might be.

I mean, look at the roofs, don’t they look alike to you?
Okay, maybe not. No, they definitely don’t. Screw it.
The aquatic stadium, or they call it the aquatic complex. I don’t know why, but they just love the word ‘complex’? Gong Badak Sports Complex, aquatic complex and when will a shopping complex be coming?

Anyway, the aquatic complex still looks nice. I can hardly deny it.
And whoa. They even have a huge screen showing scores and standings like what they had in Athens 2004.

And the analogue clock beside the screen isn’t functioning. Malaysia Boleh!
Okay, so, what actually happened today was that some swimmer from some state swam so fast as he tried to break the national record, he banged into the wall of the pool and went coma. He’s currently in the ICU of Subang Jaya Specialist Hospital because apparently the general hospital of Terengganu, which is located a stone’s throw away from the aquatic complex, doesn’t have a doctor who’s expert in such case. You know, fresh, local graduates.
And seriously, I wished it’s the first day of April.
Well, if you don’t get the joke, read the above paragraph again. If not, go get an Engrish course.

Yi Jean, Sharmyn, Yen Yen and her siblings and cousin were all there. And we saw Mr Toh Chin Keat being a volunteer there. Also, Mr Yan and his son – Jeffrey Yan. And oh, Mr Mohan was the MC alongside a Malay lady whom I don’t know.
What a coincidence huh?
A star from Sarawak (to be precise, a Miri-born star) conquered the dunno-what-stroke-men’s-swimming-competition and broke the National Record.
Hello? National Record, okay? Not any ah-cat-ah-dog-or-ah-pig can do that, mind you.
I bet you already know who the hero is.

Yes, non other than the legendary Daniel Bego.
And you might as well wanna have a closer look at the smart lad.
Likewise, I got to meet the Menteri Besar of Terengganu – YB Dato’ Ahmad Said. I mean, I didn’t actually meet him, only saw him walking past me.

It was so kind of him to show up and to give away some of the medals. I bet he has got nothing better to do in the office huh? Oh yeah, it’s Sunday.. But oh no, we’re in Terengganu. (Mind you, Terengganu’s weekends are on Friday and Saturday)
Alright. Who cares anyway, right?

Yen Yen brought along her younger sister and brother and her cousin sister. And she looks exactly like a caretaker, only she doesn’t get paid. lol. (kidding only har)
Well, nothing special happened actually. Only normal competitions, yeah, record-breaking competitions and no casualties, no one got into ICUs, and no one fell into the pool.

This cute little girl and the parents sat in front of us and I have totally no idea why did she look at me. Constantly. And the friendly parents smiled at me too. Whoa. It was as if I’m some superstar or I look like one or or Kenny Sia? LOL.
But anyway, it was very sweet of them. God bless them.
Eight more days to the end of SUKMA ’08 and a week to Euro 2008!!!

Hell. I’m starting to love Year 2008. People, remember: Visit Terengganu 2008. ;)
CHWS Lion Dance on Teacher’s Day
I paid a visit to the SMK Chung Hwa Wei Sin this morning for its Teacher’s Day celebration. The students organised a kickarse concert and there were solo performances, choir, orchestra and even a live band!
This is the video of the lion dance performance taken using Yen Yen’s K800i.
My 2 cents: This is considered very good for amateur lion-dancers like them. They’re students, ok?
And kudos to the organisers and the performers and not forgetting the clowns. More updates will follow up soon.
